God chooses according to a criterion that surprises and unsettles us, because He is not guided by appearances but by the heart. This truth, which runs through the entire history of salvation, continues to reveal how fragile our way of evaluating things really is. Human beings stop at what they see, are fascinated by what shines, measure strength by visibility and value by success. But God looks elsewhere: He seeks availability, inner truth, the capacity to let oneself be loved. It is a gaze that does not humiliate but frees; that does not judge but purifies; that does not condemn but recreates.
The wisdom of God does not coincide with human logic, and the cross is its highest expression. To human eyes, the cross appears as the ultimate defeat, the failure of a mission, the dishonor of someone who could not defend himself. Yet precisely there, where humanity sees an ending, God reveals a beginning. The cross becomes the place where God teaches that true strength is love that does not retreat, true victory is total self-giving, true glory is unwavering fidelity. It is a wisdom that humbles human pride not to crush it, but to free it from the illusion of self-sufficiency. God disguises Himself as a loser to show us that true greatness is not what the world applauds, but what the heart recognizes as authentic.
Thus, what seems weakness becomes power, what appears insignificant becomes fruitful, what looks like a mistake becomes a divine lesson. The cross teaches us not to stop at appearances, not to judge too quickly, not to fear fragility. It shows that God works precisely in the cracks, in the limits, in the situations that seem to have no way out. There His wisdom appears as light that guides without blinding, as strength that supports without imposing, as truth that frees without humiliating.
And when we realize that our way of seeing is too narrow, too poor, too tied to appearances, the cross becomes an invitation to let ourselves be corrected, converted, and looked upon by God with His gaze that sees beyond.
Prayer
Lord, purify my gaze, so that I may not stop at appearances nor judge according to criteria that are not Yours. Free me from the temptation to measure life by success, strength by noise, truth by what seems impressive. Give me a simple heart, able to recognize Your presence where human eyes see only weakness.
Teach me the wisdom of the cross, the wisdom that does not fear limits, that does not flee fragility, that is not scandalized by weakness. Help me not to reject what seems like failure, because it is precisely there that You work Your wonders. Transform my defeats into open doors for grace, my failures into divine lessons, my darkness into places where Your light can shine.
Humble, Lord, my way of seeing when it does not align with Yours. Break my false securities, purify my criteria, make my heart docile. And when the cross appears as dishonor, remind me that it is there You reveal Your glory. Look upon me, Lord, with Your gaze that sees the heart, and make me capable of recognizing Your wisdom in all things.

Dio sceglie secondo un criterio che sorprende e spiazza, perché non si lascia guidare dall’apparenza ma dal cuore. Questa verità, che attraversa tutta la storia della salvezza, continua a rivelare quanto fragile sia il nostro modo di valutare le cose. L’uomo si ferma a ciò che vede, si lascia affascinare da ciò che brilla, misura la forza con la visibilità e il valore con il successo. Ma Dio guarda altrove: cerca la disponibilità, la verità interiore, la capacità di lasciarsi amare. È uno sguardo che non umilia, ma libera; non giudica, ma purifica; non condanna, ma ricrea.
La sapienza di Dio non coincide con la logica dell’uomo, e la croce ne è il segno più alto. Agli occhi umani la croce appare come lo scacco definitivo, il fallimento di un progetto, il disonore di chi non ha saputo difendersi. Ma proprio lì, dove l’uomo vede la fine, Dio rivela l’inizio. La croce diventa la cattedra da cui Dio insegna che la vera forza è l’amore che non si ritira, la vera vittoria è il dono totale, la vera gloria è la fedeltà che non si spegne. È una sapienza che umilia l’orgoglio umano non per schiacciarlo, ma per liberarlo dalla sua illusione di autosufficienza. Dio si traveste da perdente per mostrarci che la vera grandezza non è quella che il mondo applaude, ma quella che il cuore riconosce come autentica.
Così, ciò che sembra debolezza diventa potenza, ciò che appare insignificante diventa fecondo, ciò che sembra un errore diventa una lezione divina. La croce ci educa a non fermarci alle apparenze, a non giudicare troppo presto, a non temere le fragilità. Ci insegna che Dio opera proprio nelle crepe, nei limiti, nelle situazioni che sembrano senza via d’uscita. È lì che la sua sapienza si manifesta come luce che non acceca ma guida, come forza che non impone ma sostiene, come verità che non umilia ma libera.
E quando ci accorgiamo che il nostro modo di vedere è troppo stretto, troppo povero, troppo legato alle apparenze, allora la croce diventa invito a lasciarci correggere, a lasciarci convertire, a lasciarci guardare da Dio con il suo sguardo che vede oltre.
Preghiera
Signore, purifica il mio sguardo, perché non mi fermi all’apparenza e non giudichi secondo criteri che non sono i tuoi. Liberami dalla tentazione di misurare la vita con il successo, la forza con il rumore, la verità con ciò che appare. Donami un cuore semplice, capace di riconoscere la tua presenza dove l’uomo vede solo debolezza.
Insegnami la sapienza della croce, quella che non teme il limite, che non fugge la fragilità, che non si scandalizza della debolezza. Fa’ che io non rifiuti ciò che sembra uno scacco, perché proprio lì tu operi le tue meraviglie. Trasforma le mie sconfitte in porte aperte alla grazia, i miei fallimenti in lezioni divine, le mie oscurità in luoghi dove la tua luce può brillare.
Umilia, Signore, il mio modo di vedere quando non coincide con il tuo. Spezza le mie false sicurezze, purifica i miei criteri, rendi docile il mio cuore. E quando la croce appare come disonore, ricordami che è lì che tu riveli la tua gloria. Guardami, Signore, con il tuo sguardo che vede il cuore, e rendimi capace di riconoscere la tua sapienza in ogni cosa.
