L'amore che non si dimentica

14 Sion ha detto: "Il Signore mi ha abbandonato,
il Signore mi ha dimenticato
".

English

Isaiah 49:14–16 14 Zion said, “The Lord has abandoned me, the Lord has forgotten me.” 15 Can a woman forget her nursing child, fail to have compassion on the child of her womb? Even if these were to forget, I will never forget you. 16 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are always before me.

The words of Isaiah open a window onto God’s love—an affection that is not abstract but concrete, faithful, rooted in the very depths of His mercy. “Can a woman forget her child? Even if these were to forget, I will never forget you.” It is a love that does not wear out, does not drift away, and does not give up in the face of our fragility. God remembers His child—not because we are perfect, but because we belong to Him. And when God remembers, He does not simply recall the past: He gives life, He raises up, He rebuilds, He fulfills the promise He has made.

For God, remembering is not a mental act but a movement of the heart. When He says, “I will never forget you,” He is saying: you are always before my eyes, even when you feel invisible; you are in my heart, even when you feel lost; you are within my promise, even when everything seems to contradict it. His remembering is a creative act: He lifts up what has fallen, opens paths where we see only walls, rekindles hope where we see only exhaustion.

We often fear being forgotten when we fail, when we feel poor, when life becomes heavy. But God does not love the way we do: His love does not tire, does not get distracted, does not give up. It is a love that stays, that waits, that protects. A love that does not erase wounds but walks through them with us.

A small story: The Stone in the Shepherd’s Hand

Once there was a shepherd who, every evening before closing the sheepfold, counted his sheep one by one. He did not trust the number alone: he looked into their eyes, recognized their steps, listened to their breathing. One day, a young sheep wandered off among the thorns. She was frightened, convinced that the shepherd had forgotten her. She curled up under a bush, trembling.

The shepherd, noticing her absence, left the flock safe and went out into the night. He walked among stones and thorns, calling her by name. At one point he stumbled on a smooth little stone. He picked it up and put it in his pocket. “This will remind me to keep searching until I find you,” he said.

When he finally reached the sheep, he lifted her onto his shoulders. Still trembling, she asked, “Why did you come? I thought you had forgotten me.” The shepherd smiled and took out the stone. “See this? I picked it up to remember you. But the truth is, I could never have forgotten you. It was you who forgot my love.”

From that day on, the sheep no longer looked at the shepherd with fear but with trust. And every time she saw him touch the stone in his pocket, she understood that her name was written in the shepherd’s heart.

This story expresses what Isaiah proclaims: God never forgets us, not even when we hide, when we lose our way, or when we think we are worth too little. His promise is stronger than our fears.

Is there a part of your life right now that especially needs this assurance of a love that never forgets?

8th Thursday of Saint Rita - Parish of St. Mary Assunta - Cathedral of Sora

Good and Evil Saint Augustine approached the problem of evil with profound insight and innovation, seeking to answer the question: "If God is good and omnipotent, where does evil come from?" His reflections mainly aimed to refute Manichean doctrines, which argued for the existence of two opposing principles: one good and one evil.

According to Augustine, evil lacks ontological substance—it does not exist as an autonomous entity. He defined it as a privatio boni, or the absence of good. Evil is not a creation of God but rather the result of human freedom and the choice to distance oneself from the supreme good, which is God. In other words, evil is the absence of good, just as darkness is the absence of light.

  • Augustine distinguishes three types of evil:

  1. Metaphysical evil: The intrinsic imperfection of creatures compared to divine perfection.

  2. Moral evil: Sin, which arises from the free choice of man to prefer a lesser good over a greater one.

  3. Physical evil: Suffering and inequalities, which may hold educational and redemptive value.

Evil in Sacred Scripture and the Power of Jesus The theme of evil runs throughout Sacred Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, revealing God's plan to redeem humanity and defeat evil through His power.

In the Bible, evil manifests in various forms:

  • Original sin: Evil entered the world through Adam and Eve’s disobedience (Genesis 3). This event marks the separation between humanity and God, introducing suffering and death.

  • Moral evil and human sin: The Old Testament describes how sin spreads throughout humanity, illustrated by episodes like Cain and Abel’s fratricide (Genesis 4) and corruption during Noah’s time (Genesis 6).

  • Physical evil and suffering: Manifested in natural disasters, diseases, and injustices, often experienced by the people of Israel as tests or consequences of sin.

  • Spiritual evil: Satan and demonic forces are acknowledged as adversaries to God and His will (Job 1; Zechariah 3). Spiritual evil aims to divert humanity from its relationship with God.

Yet, throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as greater than evil, leading His people toward redemption and salvation.

Jesus’ Power Against Evil Through the incarnation of Christ, evil is directly confronted in a unique and definitive way. Jesus emerges as the Savior who not only forgives sin but triumphs over evil in all its forms.

  • Jesus’ power over demons: In the Gospels, Jesus demonstrates His authority over evil spirits. Examples like the expulsion of demons in the Gerasene demoniac (Mark 5:1–20) highlight Jesus as the ultimate victor over spiritual evil.

  • Healing the wounds of physical evil: Jesus heals the sick and consoles the suffering, showing that His power transcends natural laws. The resurrection of Lazarus (John 11) powerfully exemplifies Christ’s triumph over death, the ultimate consequence of sin.

  • Victory over sin: Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the central event in the battle against evil. What appears to be evil’s victory—the cross—becomes the symbol of salvation. Jesus bears the sin of the world and redeems it, offering humanity a new path to reconciliation with God.

  • The resurrection: ultimate victory: Through His resurrection, Jesus defeats evil and death. He demonstrates that God’s power is greater than any destructive force. The resurrection marks a new beginning, where good triumphs eternally.

A Message of Hope The message of Scripture is clear: evil does not have the final word. Through His love and sacrifice, Jesus is the definitive victor over evil. He invites His disciples to share in this victory through faith, prayer, and witness. As the apostle Paul declares: “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55).

Each believer is called to live confidently in this truth and bring Christ’s redemptive power into the world, combating evil with good.

Prayer for the 8th Thursday

O glorious Saint Rita of Cascia, radiant star of Christianity, you who are venerated as the saint of impossible cases, you embodied the supreme triumph of faith and divine grace. Your unwavering trust in Christ's redeeming love lifted you above earthly suffering, making you a luminous example of hope and charity. In your constant contemplation of the wounds of Our Lord, you found the inexhaustible source of your strength, focusing on the crown of thorns that pierced His head, spilling salvific blood—a testament to His supreme sacrifice for humanity.

This sacred vision, which left an indelible mark on Veronica’s veil, inspired you to live as an instrument of peace and love. Pray, O glorious Rita, that we too may lift our spirits to the Eternal, gain steadfast faith, and become witnesses to the power of the Most High. May our supplications, once answered, celebrate divine wonders and proclaim the infinite power of God's love, so that the glory of the Father may be revealed forever in the world.

Brief narration of St. Rita's spirituality

Santa Rita of Cascia faced numerous challenges throughout her life, marked by profound sorrows that need not be recalled here. Yet, it was precisely through these trials that her spiritual strength grew even stronger, enabling her to find constant comfort and guidance in faith and prayer. A lover of peace even before entering the monastery, this natural inclination was amplified by her spiritual readings and her devout practices of charity and mercy. Santa Rita lived with the steadfast purpose of always combating evil, choosing the love and gentleness of Jesus as her weapons for victory. As a tireless promoter of peace, she was never afraid to bear witness to the Gospel, even in the face of the tensions life brought her.

The core of her strength lay in prayer and forgiveness, divine tools against evil. Saint Augustine teaches us that "Evil is nothing but the privation of good." This profound insight illuminated Santa Rita's entire existence: forgiveness, her love for Christ, and her contemplation of the crucifix became her bulwark against every absence of good, filling that void with divine love. Augustine further asserts that "God would not allow evil if He were not so powerful as to bring good from it." Santa Rita fully embodied this principle, transforming pain and adversity into opportunities for spiritual growth and mercy.

She also embraced another famous reflection from Saint Augustine: "Hope has two beautiful daughters: anger at the way things are and courage to change them." Through her example, she demonstrated that confronting evil with faith and love can lead to true redemption and inner peace.

  2. Moral nga dautan: Ang sala, nga mogikan sa kagawasan sa tawo sa pagpili sa gamay nga maayo kaysa mas dako nga maayo.

  3. Pisikal nga dautan: Ang kasakit ug kalisdanan, nga mahimong adunay edukatibo ug redemptive nga bili.

Labing Halangdon.

The English version down below

Amen.

The english translation

As the crowds were gathering, Jesus began to say: "This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah" (Luke 11:29).

Jesus considers evil those who fail to recognize the value of silence and death as necessary passages for transformation. It is essential to face moments of powerlessness and embrace the tomb as an inevitable step toward resurrection. There is no resurrection without descending into the depths.

The sign of Jonah is a fundamental symbol of true conversion. When faced with God’s divine plan, Jonah tried to flee, but God, in His mercy, brought him back to Nineveh. There, Jonah preached successfully, inspiring fasting and conversion among the people. Yet, the true sign was not so much his preaching but the fact that he remained in the belly of the fish—a symbol of powerlessness and death.

We too, in order to rise again, must learn to stop and allow ourselves to be conquered by divine will, surrendering with trust to His plan. We must deeply believe that there is a new and profound meaning in death. Through faith in Christ Jesus, the tomb is no longer the final word but becomes an open doorway to His resurrection.

In faith, even the darkest night is no longer a condemnation that robs us of light but a prelude to the radiance of a new day—a day of hope. Walking in faith means embracing hope, feeling an inner strength that propels us to live with enthusiasm and to strive toward a life full of purpose.

Fear may accompany us along the way, but it will never become an insurmountable obstacle to love. On the contrary, when faced with faith, fear can be transformed into an opportunity to grow in love and in trust in God.

Grant us, Lord, the strength to rise again with You when we reach the depths of our misery. Awaken in us, through Your Holy Spirit, the fervor that banishes indifference and stagnant routines. Revive within us a dynamic spiritual life, so that we do not fall into complacency or superficial religiosity. Amen.

The English version is down below

Come funziona?

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.” 16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.” 17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” “Twelve,” they replied. 20 “And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” They answered, “Seven.” 21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

Jesus issues a very serious warning because it is often so subtle and difficult to understand. Yeast is a fermenting agent used in cooking and baking to make dough rise and become fluffy. There are different types of yeast, the main ones being natural and chemical yeasts. Chemical yeast consists of baking soda, potassium hydrogen tartrate, and cornstarch, and it does not allow fermentation.

Natural yeast is made up of living elements and is used in baking, winemaking, brewing, and even in the preparation of vaccines (source: Tuttosullievito: link).

The name "yeast" comes from the fact that these organisms allow bread dough to "swell." How does it work? Yeasts generate a process called fermentation. In this case, it is alcoholic fermentation because glucose (sugar) is transformed into carbon dioxide and alcohol. The released carbon dioxide generates the effervescence of beer and makes the bread lighter, fluffier, and less dense.

Let's talk about the "yeast" that Jesus warned about, that of the Pharisees and that of Herod. These are two types of people who have a particular ability to really harm others. The first are those who have a religious role, frequent the temple, and hold an important position in the temple. Meanwhile, Herod, the king, had that temporal power capable of anything, even suppressing the good and innocent. Both powers elevate and inflate, but leave an emptiness inside. The yeast of the Pharisees can give the impression of being at peace with one's conscience because one adheres to a norm or tradition, but the heart is not touched by the tenderness of God's love. It is a simple religious act without a feeling of God's grace and compassion. On the other hand, the yeast of Herod is entirely oriented towards profit and human power. A vision purely for subjugating subjects and controlling people to exploit and increase economic gain.

Jesus' warning is directed at those who love him because the temptation is very strong, as those who follow him are often softened by these temptations. Jesus warns his disciples about the "yeast of the Pharisees and Herod" in Mark 8:15: "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod!" This yeast represents the hypocrisy and corruption that can infiltrate and contaminate the purity of faith.

Saint Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, uses yeast as a metaphor for sin that can corrupt the entire community: "Don't you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:6-7). Here, Paul urges believers to purify themselves from sin to be a new creation in Christ.

In Matthew 13:33, Jesus uses yeast in a positive sense to describe the kingdom of heaven: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough." This passage shows how the kingdom of God, although it starts small, can grow and transform everything it touches.

Sento compassione per la folla

Marco 8, 1-5

Amen.
