It was early in the morning when the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman to Jesus, accusing her to be caught in the "very act of committing adultery".
Then mentioned the Law of Moses that according to them it gives them the "Right" to stone such women.
1. It's really terrible to see things according to religion, in which "laws" are used to condemn and to embarass, instead of bailing-out or saving the person.
2. It's really ridiculous because in order to accuse an adulteress we should never forget that she was caught in the very act, so there was too the "adulterer". It's hypocrite!
3. Then they ask the opinion of Jesus so to bluff him and then inciminate him.
4. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger. He bent down in order not to embarass the sinner. He bent down, because the accused lady was also down to the ground with no face to look up anyone; so He reached out to that level.
Because Jesus will never embarass a sinner, Satan does!!!
Remember this Jesus will never mortify nobody. He who repents will mortify himself. But NEVER & NEVER Jesus will do that to anyone who comes to Him.
His finger on the ground... As if He is writing a New Story of Love or as if He is writing the "accusations", "the sins" on the sand or on the ground, which can be easily erased. Because for His Covenant He writes it to the rock, so it won't be wiped away.
5. When they insisted to force Him, He stood up, because He has "authority" and spoke up to them "Vis a Vis" (face to face) : «Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her».
6. He bent down again and ignore everyone... in response, they went away one by one because all of them have sinned, all of them have disobeyed the Law of Moses. All of them in one way or another they have committed wrong doings.
7. The Lord of lords, Jesus, the teacher of mercy and compassion was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”
+ Jesus rose up and talked to her face-to-face (vis-a-vis), restored, forgiven, renewed and rescued.
As we do our repentance and ask forgiveness to the Lord for our sins at this lenten time, we should always remember this characteristics of the Master of Compassion and Mercy, who always gives chance for a betterment. He will never oppress us down. He will bend so to get on to our level. He will never step as if higher than us, so to belittle and to scorn us. He who accuses us is Satan (in greek means the Accuser). The devil will do that, so to make us feel bitter. Jesus instead will make us feel secured and lightened up. His love and mercy restore all the brokenness deep inside caused by our sins. That's why it's truely a good news of life encountering Jesus and experiencing His mercy - and not just observers of the Law-of-Moses.
As Catholics we need to re-read this chapter and really get a new sense of direction of our faith, especially in practicing and in observing religiously this "Lenten Season".
From the Gospel according to John
JN 8:1-11
JN 8:1-11
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area,
and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them.
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman
who had been caught in adultery
and made her stand in the middle.
They said to him,
“Teacher, this woman was caught
in the very act of committing adultery.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?”
They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.
But when they continued asking him,
he straightened up and said to them,
“Let the one among you who is without sin
be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders.
So he was left alone with the woman before him. Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they?
Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”
